What it does
The CSV ↔ Excel Converter converts CSV to Excel (.xlsx) and Excel sheets to CSV or JSON, with a preview of the data first. It also reads .xls and .ods files, and handles commas, semicolons and tabs.
How to use it
CSV to Excel
- Open a CSV file, or paste CSV / TSV text and click Load text.
- Leave the delimiter on Auto, or choose comma, semicolon or Tab.
- Check the preview and download Excel .xlsx.
Excel to CSV or JSON
- Open an
.xlsx,.xlsor.odsfile and choose the sheet. - Download CSV or JSON.
Example
name;city;orders
Ada;London;12
Linus;Helsinki;7
is detected as semicolon-separated and becomes a three-column sheet.
Good to know
- Many European versions of Excel save "CSV" with semicolons, because the comma is the decimal separator. Auto detects this.
- CSV holds only values: formulas, formatting and multiple sheets are lost when converting to CSV.
- Leading zeros, as in phone numbers or ZIP codes, can disappear when Excel opens a CSV. Opening the converted
.xlsxkeeps the values as they were read.
FAQ
My CSV shows strange characters in Excel. Why?
The file is probably UTF-8 but Excel guessed another encoding. Converting it to .xlsx here avoids the problem.
Can I convert JSON to Excel? Convert JSON to CSV with the Data Format Converter first, then convert that CSV here.
