Smallpdf and iLovePDF alternatives that never upload your PDF

By Uxair Ijaz · 2026-11-01 · 6 min read

Smallpdf and iLovePDF are the two names most people think of for quick PDF jobs: merge two files, split out a page, turn a PDF into Word. Both work by uploading your file to their servers, processing it there and letting you download the result. For a menu or a flyer that is fine. For a contract, a payslip, a bank statement or a medical letter, many people would rather the file never left their computer.

This article compares the two with the PDF tools on InTab, which process files inside your browser, and is honest about where each one is the better choice.

Disclosure: InTab is our site. Facts about Smallpdf and iLovePDF come from their own websites and were checked on 1 November 2026; prices and limits change, so check their pricing pages before you decide.

How each one handles your file

Smallpdf uploads your file over an encrypted connection and, by its own account, deletes files from its free tools after one hour. Files you keep in a Smallpdf account stay until you delete them, and documents sent for e-signature are kept for 14 days (Smallpdf: Is Smallpdf safe?).

iLovePDF uploads your file too and says documents are "completely deleted within 2 hours of upload". You can also press Delete it now on the download page to remove a file straight away (iLovePDF: delete a file).

InTab never uploads the PDF. Merging, splitting, rotating and converting run in your browser tab with JavaScript and WebAssembly, and the result is built on your own machine. The site's Content Security Policy only lets a page talk to the site itself and two named services (OCR language files and page-view counts), so the browser itself would block an upload. The privacy page has the details, and you can confirm it in your browser's Network tab.

Deleting files after an hour or two is a reasonable policy, and both companies describe security measures. The difference is that with an upload you are trusting a policy; without one there is nothing to delete.

Where Smallpdf and iLovePDF are stronger

They are full PDF suites, and InTab is not trying to be one.

  • More tools. Compressing a PDF, editing text in place, adding a signature, password protection, unlocking, redaction, page numbers and watermarks are all there. InTab has none of these today.
  • Office formats. Both convert PDFs to and from PowerPoint and Excel. InTab can view those files and convert between CSV and Excel, but not PDF to PowerPoint.
  • Apps and workflows. Desktop apps, mobile apps, cloud storage connections and team plans.
  • Very large files. Server processing does not depend on how much memory your computer has.

If you need any of those, use them, ideally with Delete it now (iLovePDF) or without saving to an account (Smallpdf) for anything sensitive.

Where InTab is the better fit

  • Sensitive documents. Contracts, IDs, payslips, statements and anything under a confidentiality agreement. No upload means no retention policy to rely on.
  • No daily limits. Smallpdf's free plan allows two tasks a day, according to its own guides, and iLovePDF caps files and size per task. InTab has no plan and no counter.
  • PDF to Word that looks like the PDF. PDF to Word has an Exact layout that keeps every line of text where it was on the page, with tables, rules and images drawn as in the original, and a Flowing layout that rebuilds paragraphs for heavy editing. Scanned pages go through OCR in your browser; only the language data (a few megabytes) is downloaded, once.
  • Documents you write yourself. Markdown to PDF, HTML to PDF and Word to PDF, plus invoices, quotations and payslips that download straight to PDF.

A quick test for any PDF website

  1. Open your browser's developer tools and select the Network tab.
  2. Drop a PDF onto the site and run the task.
  3. Look for a large request about the size of your file. If there is one, your PDF was uploaded.

Then read the site's privacy page for how long it keeps files, and whether that changes when you sign in.
