What it does
The Text Diff Checker shows exactly which words changed between two versions of a document: an edited contract, a revised article, a translated paragraph or two drafts of an email. Removed words and added words are highlighted in place, so you can review an edit without reading both versions side by side yourself.
How to use it
- Paste the earlier text into Original and the new text into Changed.
- Click Compare. Word-level comparison is already selected.
- Switch to Lines or Chars for a different level of detail, and to Side by side or Unified for a different layout.
- Swap reverses the direction if you pasted the texts the wrong way round.
Example
| Original | Changed |
|---|---|
| The tenant must give two months' notice in writing. | The tenant must give one month's notice in writing or by email. |
The checker marks two months' as removed, one month's as added, and or by email as added.
Good to know
- Word mode is the right choice for prose: a single changed word does not mark the whole line as different.
- Changes in punctuation and capital letters count as changes, which matters in legal and financial text.
- For source code and data files, the Diff Finder in Lines mode is usually clearer.
FAQ
Can I compare Word or PDF documents? Copy the text out of each document and paste it here. The Word Viewer and PDF Viewer let you open and select text without Word or Acrobat.
Is there a length limit? No fixed limit, but very long texts take longer to compare in word mode.
